Lie vs Lay

Differences between Lay and Lie.

First I have to remark that both are verbs and are very tricky and confusing.

LIE means rest or recline. to be on a surface. for example:

  •  Sleeping on the armchair. in other words we can turn this statement into lying on the armchair.
LAY means to put something on a surface. for example:

  • He laid the cup of coffee on the table.

But I have to emphasize that Lie to say something is untrue most of the time or always is linked with the preposition to and the past tense is different from Lie which means rest that is linked always with the preposition on

For example:

I lied to her.'said something untrue' and,
I lay on the couch ' I rested'.
